About Us
Killarney Community Lutheran Church (KCLC) is a member of Lutheran Church–Canada, a confessional church body comprised of congregations, pastors, and deacons committed to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our confessions are based on the foundation of God’s Word and the belief that God’s gift of salvation is found only through faith in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son. We serve to equip and motivate our members to confess, proclaim, and give witness to the saving work of Jesus Christ.
Our Faith
Being a Lutheran Church means that all the teachings and practices are rooted in the Holy Bible. In the 16th century, Martin Luther and other reformers in Christianity wrote defenses and arguments based upon the Bible to present before a series of theological gatherings in efforts to realign Christian beliefs and practices with its source – the Scripture. These documents were eventually compiled into The Book of Concord which contains our statements of faith (doctrine and confessions of Lutheran Christians). To confirm our faith upon (or after) baptism, we study the Small Catechism in detail to understand the main elements of our belief.
We believe that salvation is only possible through Faith in God and Grace from God. We cannot gain access to heaven by our own efforts or merits. Our relationship with God is restored only through Lord Jesus by God’s grace. We are saved when we believe. Good works are signs of our faith in God, not the means.
“that people cannot be justified before God by their own strengths, merits, or works. People are freely justified for Christ’s sake, through faith, when they believe that they are received into favor and that their sins are forgiven for Christ’s sake. By His death, Christ made satisfaction for our sins. God counts this faith for righteousness in His sight (Romans 3:21-26; 4:5).” – Augsburg Confession IV.1-3
The only authority and basis for the Christian faith, teaching, and way of life is the infallible Word of God – the Bible (the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments).
The Bible and, as such, the Christian faith, is about Jesus Christ who alone is “”the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6); and as He Himself says, “You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me” (John 5:39).
We confess our faith with Apostles’, Nicene and Athanasian Creeds. We believe in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism and the Sacrament of the Altar. Click to find out more on What We Believe or email Pastor Mark Chiang to set up a meeting.
Our Vision
We will reach out and become the vital support community of Southeast Vancouver by expressing God’s love.
Our History as a Congregation
Killarney Community Lutheran Church is an English and Chinese congregation born from the amalgamation of Killarney Park Lutheran Church and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Killarney Park was founded in 1959 at its current location to serve the Killarney community. Prince of Peace was founded in 1956 as a Chinese ministry in Vancouver’s Chinatown, and served the Chinatown community from the 1960s to 1980s on Keefer Street. It moved to the Killarney neighbourhood in 1990 to better serve the Cantonese-speaking newcomers to Vancouver. The two congregations combined in 2015 with services and programs offered in English and Chinese.
KCLC is committed to serve our community as a friendly hub for families to gather in worship, fellowship, and activities. Everyone is welcomed to join us in learning about God’s Word and in exploring / reflecting on our individual God-pleasing purposes on earth.
